What is Auto Insurance

An auto insurance policy consists of six different kinds of coverage. Most states require you to purchase a minimum amount of automobile coverage, often referred to as “liability insurance.” However, if you are looking to protect yourself from unexpected events, such as huge auto repair bills, resulting from an accident for which you were not at fault, it may be wise to acquire a well balanced auto insurance package.

Auto Insurance Basics

As mentioned above, an auto insurance policy consists of six (6) different types of coverage. Here is what is covered in a basic auto policy by each:

Bodily Injury Liability
This coverage applies to injuries that you cause to someone else. You should consider buying more than the state-required minimum to protect assets such as your home and savings in the event you are involved in a serious accident & sued.

Personal Injury Liability
At its broadest, it can cover medical payments, lost wages and the cost of replacing services normally performed by someone injured in an auto accident.

Property Damage Liability
This coverage pays for damage you may cause to someone else’s property. This includes someone else’s car, bas well as damage to lamp posts, telephone poles, fences, buildings or other structures your car hit.

Collision
This coverage pays for damage to your car resulting from a collision with another car. It also covers damage caused by potholes. Collision coverage is generally sold with a deductible of $250 to $1,000-the higher your deductible, the lower your premium. Even if you are at fault for the accident, your collision coverage will reimburse you for the costs of repairing your car, minus the deductible.

Comprehensive
This coverage reimburses you for loss due to theft or damage caused by something other than a collision with another car. This would include fire, falling objects, missiles, explosion, earthquake, windstorm, hail, flood, vandalism, riots, or contact with animals such as birds or deer. Comprehensive insurance usually has a $100 to $300 deductible, again if you opt for a higher deductible you will your premium.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage
This coverage will reimburse you are hit by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver.

Auto Insurance Policy

Most auto policies are for six months to a year. An auto insurance policy is a contract between you and the insurance company. You agree to pay the premium and the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as defined in your policy. Auto insurance can provide property, liability and medical coverage.

Property Coverage
Pays for damage to or theft of your car

Liability Coverage
Pays for your legal responsibility as defined under state law

Medical Coverage
Pays for most hospital costs, including treatment for injuries, as well as in some cases, loss wages & funeral expenses.

Drivers who fail to acquire the correct auto insurance package are putting themselves at greater risk for substantial financial loss in the event of an accident. Some drivers have been fortunate enough to never have an accident in which a claim was filed against them. However, some things are to important should to be left to chance.
